Academic writing course

The course “Academic Writing” (Lingua inglese per scopi accademici e l’esame IELTS), 4 ECTS, is held by Professor Martin Harper at the Linguistic Laboratory, housed at the Department of Political Science, Communication and International Relations, Piazza Strambi no. 2.

 

TIMETABLE: From February 23rd, Thursday 16.00—18.00

 

LESSON 1: Conventional word order in English within an academic context. Discussion: Why do people choose to go to university ?

LESSON 2: Describing the academic world: the academic word list of commonly used words and phrases. Discussion: What are universities for ? What should universities do for (i) students; (ii) the academic community; (iii) the local community ?

LESSON 3: Comparing and contrasting. Financing higher education: grants and students loans in Italy, England, Scotland, Wales and the USA.

LESSON 4: Summarizing data: describing graphs, trends and statistics.

LESSON 5: Describing cause and effect: summarizing historical events and their consequences using the appropriate tenses.

LESSON 6: Describing processes using the active and passive voice.

LESSON 7: Culture shock: studying abroad – outlining advantages and disadvantages.

LESSON 8: The conventional five-paragraph academic essay. Presentation, content and rhetorical structure.

LESSON 9: The impact of the new media. Developing an argument: causes, factors and reasons.

LESSON 10: Constructing Discourse: paragraphing, combining sentences using relative pronouns and relative clauses.
